Calgary Dentists

There are over a thousand Calgary dentists so finding a dentist should not be too difficult. However, they all have different specialties, different levels of experience, different degrees of expertise, and different fees.

The vast majorities of these dentists practice General Dentistry (generalists) and have a general overview of all the areas of dentistry. As a registered dentist he/she can legally perform any dental procedure they feel competent in.

However, some of these general dentists may refer you to a dental specialist if the treatment you require is beyond their field of expertise or training. Other general dentists may choose not to refer you to a specialist, but opt to do all the required dental procedures themselves.

A growing number of local dentists are also specialists in one or more of the nine dental specialist classifications that are recognized by The Canadian Dental Association (CDA) and Alberta Dental Association (ADA). These dental specialists are:

• Endodontist
• Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons
• Orthodontists (& Dentofacial Orthopedics)
• Pediatric Dentist
• Periodontist
• Prosthodontists
• Oral Pathologists (& oral medicine)
• Oral Radiologists
• Public Health Dentists

Note: It is important that we do not confuse these dental specialists with the different types of general dentists. These other types of dentists would include the following:

• Aesthetic dentist, cosmetic dentist, and restorative dentist;
• Laser Dentist;
